Sometimes the best way to teach a class is to have the students teach you. Every year, Banteay Srei members can participate in a photo documentary project that tells the stories of their lives.

The Accident
by Maureen

'This is a double exposed frame. I didnt mean to make it like that, it is what it is.' "> Beauty in the Beast
by Celine

'Theyre so beautiful. These traditional dancers are performing for the Cambodian New Year. Its in the middle of the Tenderloin. You cant tell how crazy the city looks like because all you can see is them.' "> Chicken Wings
by Colleen

'I grew up around the Tenderloin. When I was a kid we use to go down to this corner store almost everyday to buy chicken wings. They used to be 3 for 99 cents but now theyre 3 for $1.25.' "> Grilled Cheese
by Davy

'I took this picture because Maria is really happy in it and she looks like shes having fun! She was swinging back and forth on this rope swing up in the SOL kitchen. Sometimes its easy to forget to just have fun and enjoy life. I think we need to try to have more fun more often.' ">

Hands, Work Work
by Elizabeth

'This reminds me of when I used to listen to my mom tell me stories while she worked. She was always doing somethingworking in the donut shop, working at the swap meet, sewing piece clothing for pennies, anything to make ends meet and then some. When my dad died, she refused to close the shop because funerals dont pay the rent. I didnt understand why she couldnt stop. When I finally asked her why she never stopped working she said, When you survive through two wars and have ten kids, you never stop.' "> Money
by Maureen

'Money makes the world go round. We all do crazy things for money. We all need it.' "> Oakland Portraits
by Davy

'We interviewed our friends and family members about how sex work and prostitution have affected their lives. We asked them, Do you personally know someone who is involved in prostitution? and they all said yes. Then we went to UC Berkeley and asked some students the same questions. Turns out almost all of them dont know anyone personally who prostitutes. Damn, even my little sister knows someone. How come this is an issue in Oakland but not an issue here?' "> Where I am and Where Im Going
by Monica

'I took a picture of my backyard, then I took a picture of UC Berkeley. I live in Oakland, I love it here. Oakland will always be my home. But one day, I want to go to college, I want a good education, I want to know that where I am is what I need to do to get where Im going.' ">
